Villa Lariana
A 19th-century villa on the western shore with a garden that runs down to its own boathouse, a wooden launch, and staff who have been there longer than the current owners.
Lariana is what people picture when they picture the lake: ochre walls, green shutters, a double staircase down to the water, a garden of camellias and cypresses planted a hundred and fifty years ago. It has been modernised carefully, so the bathrooms are new and the frescoes are not.
The boathouse holds a wooden launch and the boatman who runs it, which is how you go to lunch. Bellagio is fifteen minutes across the water, Cernobbio forty down the shore, and Villa Carlotta is next door.
The house works all year. In May the garden is at its height, in October the light is the best on the lake, and at Christmas the fires are lit and the mountains are white.
