Mykonos & the Cyclades

White walls and the meltemi

Mykonos & the Cyclades

Mykonos for the beaches and the night, Paros and Antiparos for the calm, Santorini for the view once. The islands are a sailing ground first, and July and August belong to the wind.

Cyclades, Greece

Mykonos is small, dry and expensive, and in high season the best houses cost what a yacht costs. The reason to come is the light, the beaches on the south coast, which are some of the finest in Greece, and a night that starts at midnight and runs until the sun. We put families in the Agios Lazaros and Aleomandra hills, ten minutes from town and out of earshot of it.

The wind matters more here than anywhere on this list. From mid-July to late August the meltemi blows from the north, and a charter must be planned around it: south-coast anchorages, an experienced captain and a boat that can take a sea. In June and September the same islands are a different, gentler place.

Paros and Antiparos, an hour south by boat, are where the quiet Cyclades begin: fewer people, better tavernas, houses with land. Santorini is a day trip and one is enough.
