Saint-Tropez

The village that became a season

Saint-Tropez

A fishing village with a harbour full of the wrong boats and the best beach in France ten minutes south. Loud in August, perfect in June and September.

Var, France

The village is small, the gulf is big, and the pleasure of Saint-Tropez is the distance between the two. We put families in the hills of Ramatuelle or on the Parcs, where the houses have their own path to the water, and we send them into town by boat, because the road at noon in August is the only genuinely unpleasant thing here.

Pampelonne is the reason to come: five kilometres of sand with the beach clubs at one end and nothing at the other. Each club has a character and a crowd, and choosing the right one for the family on board is half of what the desk does in July.

By boat the gulf, the Îles d’Hyères and the calanques of Cassis are all within a day. The old port takes yachts to about 70 metres and is the best people-watching in the Mediterranean, in both directions.
